“I inquired, ‘Who are you?’ to the unfamiliar man beside me in bed, and he replied, ‘I’m your husband’ — A Tale of the Day.”

One night, I returned home and settled next to my husband in bed.

However, when he awoke, I was confronted by the unfamiliar face of a stranger who shared a life-altering secret that I could scarcely accept.

“Are you really my grandfather?” I queried into the phone after receiving a puzzling call one day.

I had no remaining family; my mother had succumbed to cancer years earlier, and my maternal grandparents had passed when she was very young.

I had no knowledge of my father either.

My mother had told me he vanished after learning of her pregnancy with me.

As a result, I had never fostered meaningful relationships with men.

Now, however, a stranger claimed to be my grandfather and wanted to meet with me.

He had tracked me down thanks to one of those DNA test kits, which I had ordered only to uncover my medical background.

Suddenly, I appeared to have family.

He lived in a different town and even purchased my plane ticket to come see him. “Hi, Lucy. I’m Zachary Gaines.

It’s a pleasure to meet you,” he greeted me.

“It’s nice to meet you too. I’m not the best at small talk, so can I ask why my father left my mother when she was pregnant?” I inquired right away.

Zachary took a deep breath and began his tale. “My son, Peter, didn’t abandon you.

One day, he left for a business trip that extended for several months. He returned, announcing he had fallen in love and was getting married,” he recounted.

“We were so happy he was finally settling down. But the very next day, he was involved in a severe car crash and died.

He hadn’t mentioned anything about your mother, and his phone was destroyed in the accident, so we had no way to reach you,” he concluded, a tear rolling down his cheek.

Zachary shared more stories about my father and suggested I move to his town. He owned a publishing business and wanted me to work with him. Eager for family after many solitary years, I agreed.

Eventually, Zachary’s health necessitated his retirement, and we hired Mary as his live-in caregiver.

She introduced me to her friend Alex, and we instantly connected.

Our romance was intense. Although I wasn’t savvy about men, he was stunning and adored me. We married just a month after our first meeting, with my grandfather giving me away at the wedding.

While I worried about Zachary’s declining health, Alex was incredibly supportive.
