When Loris and Holt, my grandparents, planned their anniversary with a fancy dinner at a local upscale restaurant, Loris went early to pick the dishes for the menu. But a small accident got out of hand when she accidentally knocked over a plate — leading to her being thrown out in the most humiliating way. But I, Bex, quietly planned my own kind of payback.
It was supposed to be a simple, happy visit — a grandmother checking the quality of the food at a local restaurant for her upcoming 50th wedding anniversary dinner with her husband and their closest family. Yet, what happened to my grandmother was nothing short of cruel and heartbreaking. My grandparents were getting ready to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in just a week.
Loris wanted to host a big dinner for the whole family, and to make sure everything was just right, she decided to visit the restaurant alone to finalize the menu and try a few dishes, including a special request for meatloaf. “Meatloaf?” my mother, Mirae, asked, looking confused. “Why meatloaf for a fancy dinner like that?”
“Because it’s special to us, Mirae,” Loris said, her eyes shining with a gentle smile.
“Your father and I had meatloaf on our first date, and it’s been a constant in our marriage.”
“Meatloaf Mondays,” my mother chuckled, shaking her head slightly. “I remember those all through my childhood.”
“Do you want me to come with you, Gran?” I asked, a bit concerned about my 72-year-old grandmother handling it all alone. Even though she was proud of her good health and independence, she sometimes needed help staying steady.
“No, Bex,” she said firmly, shaking her head with quiet resolve. “I’ll be just fine! And this way, you’ll be surprised at the dinner too.”
On the day she planned her tasting visit to the restaurant, I drove her there and then headed home to keep working.
“Make sure you tell them to call me when you’re ready to be picked up, okay?” I said, shutting the passenger door carefully for her. I went about my day as usual, only to get a call from Loris about two hours later. Her voice was trembling, and she was crushed, crying so hard I could barely understand her words.
I rushed to the restaurant right away. It turned out that when she went into the restaurant and ordered all the dishes she wanted to try, the table got crowded with plates, as expected. As Loris tried to shift her position slightly, her elbow accidentally bumped the table, causing one plate to fall and shatter on the floor.
