A model says becoming an adult content creator during the global pandemic helped get her life back on track.
Rori Satya’s life was going nowhere fast but corònavirus forced a switch which changed her fortunes.
Before Covid-19 hit, the 33-year-old was working as an exotic dancer and battling alcohol and drug addictions.
Despite wanting to change her circumstances, the Vancouver native said that her options were limited and she became stuck in a cycle.
Surrounded by people who were all in the same situation, she was stuck in a rut and the future looked bleak.
“I was surrounded by a lifestyle where every single person that I knew was drinking and using as much as I was, it was so normalised and so accepted,” Satya told Daily Hive Canada.
“That’s when I realised I had a problem. I spent the next year continuing to work and trying to quit on my own, which was a failing mission.
“And my addiction got worse and worse, and I ended up in the hospital.”
When the COVID-19 pandemic forced businesses to close in March 2020, Satya turned to online sėx work to pay her bills. She joined OnlyFans, a popular platform for adult content creators, and it helped her get clean.
“I didn’t have access to drugs anymore,” she said. “I was in a new environment; I was at home. I could make money whilst avoiding all the things that would usually drain my income.”
Known as Aria Butterfly on OnlyFans and other social media platforms like Instagram and X, Satya started earning much more than she ever did as an exotic dancer. Two years later, she was making between $8,000 (£6.3k) to $16,000 (£12.7k) a month.
“A lot of creators use their money for luxury lifestyles, they buy designer bags and cars,” she said. “I didn’t want to look rich. I wanted to be stable, to change my life and my little sister’s trajectory.”
Satya, who is studying psychology, admits she would have preferred not to venture into online sėx work. However, “some people are passionate about it and love the work and maybe content creation or other aspects of it”, she said.
“They can use it as a stepping stone but this industry is short-lived. It’s not a career, and it can become very much a trap for most people. I’ve seen a lot of amazing people get really wrapped up in it.”
