When Emma’s husband, Mike, makes fun of her age in public, the celebration of her 57th birthday takes a terrible turn. My husband yelled at my birthday party that I was too old to want, and my friend took revenge on me. Tensions rise as her best friend offers to defend Emma by revealing a fact that leaves Emma and the other guests stunned.

Contrary to popular belief, I really enjoy being this age, and yesterday was my fifty-seventh birthday. I’m happy with my wrinkles and gray hair because I know who I am and have nothing to prove. If my husband Mike had felt the same way, it could have saved a lot of pain.

Mike has recently made it a habit to, whenever he can, make fun of my age. He appears to think he is a stand-up comedian. Oh, Emma, did you forget your dentures?

He’ll ask. then chuckle incessantly. Mike, you are, indeed, quite original.

Nevertheless, I insisted that he not ruin my birthday. I changed out of my old clothes, decorated the house, and asked all of my friends in the area. Before Mike barked, I was ecstatically excited.

He asked me, “You really think you can pull that off? ” as he looked at me incredulously. I fired back, trying to keep him away from me.

Naturally, I can. ” Mike laughed and gave a head shake. You seem to be losing touch with reality, so maybe we should get you checked for dementia.

“His comments pierced my heart like a blade. I had the intention of responding harshly, but I ran out of words. The doorbell then went off.

My best friend Karen arrived first. She immediately praised my clothing, which gave me the confidence boost I needed after Mike made fun of me. The house burst into laughter and conversation as the additional guests trickled in.

I was at ease greeting everyone and making sure they had refreshments. However, Mike naturally needed to stop things. “Emma, do you really believe that wine is something you should drink?

” Is it not time for you to fall asleep? In order for everyone to hear, he spoke loudly. There were a few awkward laughs, but most of the time there was awkward silence.

Through my clenched jaw, I forced a smile. Mike, I’ll handle it. During the celebration, I tried to ignore him, but he insisted.

Do you intend to eat that cake? “Do you really want to be old and fat? ” he asked.

as I headed out to get a slice. I did everything in my power to avoid yelling at him. Mike’s comments became more and more hurtful as the evening went on, like little jabs at my heart.
