I don’t require any, oh. I brought my mother’s food. In all honesty, no one can match her cooking abilities.
The plate in my hand suddenly felt heavy, so I stopped. “Oh! The Tupperware I said, thinking back to Jamie’s mother’s food.
He got up and said, “I’ll get it. ” What did your mother produce? In an effort to keep things light, I asked, hoping Jamie wouldn’t think I had left it in the kitchen on purpose.
Was it a favorite of mine? ” With a happy expression on his face, he returned with the container after entering the kitchen. He replied, a little too proudly, “No.
” Simply put, her food is always superior. You should know that you shouldn’t really trust anyone else’s food. The music was the only thing keeping the atmosphere alive, which was slowly changing as the room went silent.
I felt insulted. Naturally, I was. However, I didn’t want to get into a fight with Jamie.
I smiled at the table instead. “Well, why don’t we try some of Jamie’s mom’s food? ” I asked.
I inquired. Although the food was savored and nods of agreement were exchanged, the initial sting of Jamie’s words persisted. At that point, I decided that a subtle lesson was required.
My mother brought out the birthday cake as the dinner plates were being cleared, and everyone sang and toasted to me. The second day of the birthday weekend was the following day. We were all buzzing with excitement as I had hoped to go go-karting with the same group.
Before I called out, Jamie was shining with anticipation as he approached the kart next to me. I apologized to Jamie as my appropriately dressed father joined us. Dad will accompany me on the road because I don’t really trust anyone else to drive.
As he connected the dots, Jamie’s smile faltered and his eyes flickered with realization. He realized how ironic it was that he had to wait by himself while everyone else joined forces. The drive home was quiet, the air thick with thoughts unspoken, despite the fun on the track.
I was prepared to talk about our relationship with Jamie when we met at a coffee shop a few days later. He admitted, his voice low, “I just felt so embarrassed at the track. ” And I didn’t realize how my words sounded until it was too late at your birthday dinner.
” I had a cup of coffee. I had to be careful with what I said. I had, in fact, been in love with Jamie for some time.
I simply required confirmation. I was, and now I was. Jamie, I just wanted you to feel it for yourself,” I gently explained.
Even when we don’t mean to, sometimes what we say can hurt. Despite his deep hurt, he gave a slow nod. We decided to split up as we paid the bill because the stress was too much for our already fragile relationship.
I was introducing Tom, my current boyfriend, to everyone by the time my next birthday arrived. I was hopeful, but cautious about having him in such a intimate setting, despite the ghosts of birthdays past. With my birthday plans this time, I had gone a little bigger and spent a little more.
In order to spend more time with my guests, I hired a chef. We had all become quite busy over the previous year, and as a result, we saw each other less frequently. We had a chance to catch up and just be together at this time.
Polaroid photos were being taken at the booth I had set up by everyone who showed up just to make silly memories. For this birthday, I had planned signature cocktails and wanted everything to be perfect. When Tom arrived, I felt my anxiety rise as soon as I saw his arms full.
It appeared as though the past was repeating itself. Tom was standing there, holding two large Tupperware containers. What is it?
” pointing to the containers, I inquired. Take the flowers first, birthday girl,” Tom said with a smile as he slightly opened his arm for me to pick up a bouquet from under it. I saw behind me that my friends and parents had briefly clenched their fists, triggering a collective flashback.
But Tom, who was completely different from Jamie, laughed at everyone as he hugged everyone and made sure to kiss my mother on the cheek as he went around the room. Before anyone jumps to conclusions, my mother prepared Gabi’s favorite cheesecake. Additionally, she insisted that I take it for dessert.
I grinned. I couldn’t believe how fortunate I had been in my relationship with Tom. The stark and encouraging contrast to last year was reflected in the room’s laughter and relieved sighs.
Tom joined in on every conversation and made sure that everyone’s glasses were full before dinner. Additionally, I could see that the people who were closest to me were also falling for him. We enjoyed the cheesecake that had been made just for me when it came time for dessert.
I realized how different I had been the year before and how different my decisions had been going forward as I looked around at Tom and my friends that night. All I wanted was to be with someone who appreciated my work. In fact, this birthday was a celebration of new beginnings and the thoughtful, small acts that truly define our relationships, not just a celebration of another year.
