As I stood there, the paper trembling in my hands, the world around me began to fade. The voices of the hospital staff became distant echoes, muffled by the pounding in my ears. Jessica Ramirez was not just any woman—she was someone I had known, someone I had trusted.
A coworker of Michael’s, she had always been friendly, but never had I suspected anything more than professional courtesy.
I felt the cold, hard surface of the hospital floor beneath my knees before I even realized I had fallen. This couldn’t be happening. Not now, not when we were about to start a family.
The life inside me gave a gentle kick, a reminder of the little one who needed me to stay strong.
The urgency of the situation pushed the betrayal aside, at least for the moment. I needed to see Michael, to understand what happened. The nurse helped me to my feet, her grip firm and reassuring as she led me toward the room where Michael lay.
My heart raced with every step.
The corridors seemed endless, and with each passing second, my mind raced through a myriad of possibilities. Had he been living a double life? Was this just a terrible misunderstanding?
I longed for answers, yet dreaded what I might uncover.
When we reached the room, the doctor was waiting, his expression a mix of professionalism and sympathy. “Ma’am, what you’re about to see may shock you,” he warned. His words echoed in my mind as he pulled back the curtain, revealing the scene behind it.
Michael lay on the hospital bed, his face pale but conscious.
His right arm was in a cast, and he looked at me with a mixture of relief and something else—guilt. Beside him, Jessica sat with a bandaged forehead, her eyes locked onto mine with an expression that was difficult to read.
I struggled to keep my emotions in check as I approached Michael. “What happened?” My voice was steadier than I felt.
“We were on our way back from a meeting,” Michael explained, wincing with each word.
“She needed a ride, and… it just happened so fast. The car… it skidded off the road.”
I nodded, trying to process his explanation, but it did little to quell the storm inside me. It wasn’t the accident that I couldn’t comprehend; it was how he had ended up in that car with her in the first place.
The trust we had built over the years felt like it was crumbling with each passing second.
