it.”

I hesitated, my practical side screaming that this was a terrible idea. But then she smiled again and added, “I picked you because you’re genuinely good-looking and seem trustworthy. Plus, you look like the type of guy my parents would approve of.”

Flattery and $500? I felt my resolve cracking. That money could cover Mom’s physical therapy sessions for two months.

Against my better judgment, I heard myself saying, “Okay, but just this once.”

Her face lit up. “Perfect! Lunch is in an hour. We should probably walk over together so we look natural.”

The restaurant was only a few blocks away, but those 15 minutes felt like the longest walk of my life. Meredith chatted casually about the weather and asked basic questions about my job to make our relationship seem believable.

I tried to relax, telling myself this would be over soon.

But the moment we stepped into the upscale Italian restaurant, and I saw her parents waiting at a corner table, my stomach dropped straight to my feet.

I wanted to turn around and bolt for the door.

Her father was David. My boss. The CEO of my company.

Not just any boss, but the guy I’d shaken hands with at corporate parties and company retreats. The man who’d praised my work ethic just last month. And judging by the way his eyebrow shot up when he saw me, he definitely recognized me, too.

“Oh no,” I whispered under my breath, but Meredith was already pulling me forward by the hand.

“Mom, Dad, I’d like you to meet my boyfriend Anthony,” she announced with a bright smile, completely oblivious to the fact that she’d just thrown me into a professional nightmare.

The next hour was pure torture.

David drilled me with questions, but instead of asking about my relationship with his daughter, he kept steering the conversation back to work projects and company goals.

“So, Anthony,” David said, cutting into his steak, “how’s that Morrison account coming along?”

“Going well, sir,” I managed to speak up. “We should have the final presentation ready by Thursday.”

Meanwhile, Meredith’s mother kept gushing about how happy she was that her daughter had finally found “such a nice young man.” Every compliment felt like another nail in my professional coffin.

The worst moment came near the end when David raised his wine glass and said, “I always hoped Meredith would date someone with more… ambition. But since you work for me, Anthony, maybe you’re not a complete disaster. Just remember, if you hurt my little girl, you’ll never work in this industry again. I’ll personally make sure of that.”

I smiled and nodded like my life depended on it, but inside I was dying a slow, agonizing death.

After lunch, Meredith suggested we “take a romantic walk” around the block. The second we were out of her parents’ sight, I grabbed her arm and spun her around to face me.

“You have to tell your dad the truth right now,” I said. “I can’t risk my job over this. I’m supporting my elderly mother. I need this career.”

She gave me this casual, almost bored look and shrugged. “I can’t do that. It would create too much drama with my parents. They’d never let it go.”

“Then we’re done,” I said firmly. “This was supposed to be one lunch. I’m out.”

“Don’t worry about it,” she waved her hand. “I’ll call you next week for our next family dinner.”

“What?” I stared at her in disbelief. “No, absolutely not. This was a one-time thing.”

She turned and started walking away like I hadn’t even spoken.

“See you next week, Anthony. And don’t even think about backing out now.”

I stood there on the sidewalk feeling like I’d just stepped into some kind of psychological trap. How had a simple favor turned into an ongoing nightmare?

True to her word, she called the following Tuesday. This time, it was dinner at her parents’ house. I knew I should have said no, but David’s threat kept echoing in my head. What if I refused and she told him some twisted version of events?

So, I went. Again.

The dinner was even worse than the lunch.

David kept making pointed comments about my “future with his daughter” while Meredith played the perfect loving girlfriend. Every fake smile she gave me felt like another link in the chain binding me to this insane situation.

Afterward, while I was driving her home, I tried one more time to reason with her.

“Meredith, I’ll pay you back the five hundred dollars,” I said, keeping my eyes on the road. “But I’m done. I can’t live under this constant threat anymore.”

She actually laughed. “I didn’t know you worked for my dad when I first picked you. But now that I do, it would be stupid not to use that to my advantage.”

“You’re manipulating me,” I said.

She shrugged without a hint of shame. “So? You’re already in this deep. If you try to back out now or say anything to my dad, I’ll just twist the story. I’ll make you look like the creep who was harassing me. Who do you think he’ll believe? His beloved daughter or some random employee?”

My hands tightened on the steering wheel. “This is insane.”

“See you next week,” she said as I pulled up to her apartment building. “Don’t disappoint me, Anthony.”

What she didn’t know was that I’d been recording our conversation on my phone the entire drive home. Her casual admission of manipulation and threats was all captured in crystal-clear audio.

The next morning, I walked straight into David’s office. My hands were shaking, but I knew I had to come clean before this went any further.

“Sir, I need to tell you something about your daughter and me,” I began, then laid out the entire story.

I explained how I’d met Meredith, how I hadn’t known she was his daughter, and how trapped I felt.

To back up my story, I played the recording from the car where she’d admitted to manipulating me.

I fully expected to be fired on the spot.

Instead, David burst out laughing.

“I figured as much,” he said, wiping a tear from his eye. “You’re not the first guy she’s pulled this stunt with, Anthony. Every month it’s a new ‘boyfriend.’ Her mother still can’t accept that Meredith prefers women, so my daughter brings home a different guy every month just to keep up the charade.”

I sat there, trying to process what he’d just told me.

He leaned back in his chair and continued, “I’ve known about Meredith’s real preferences for years, but her mother is old-fashioned. Rather than cause family drama, I just let Meredith handle it her way. What I didn’t expect was for her to start threatening and manipulating these poor guys.”

“So… I’m not fired?” I asked, hardly believing this conversation was real.

“Fired? Hell no,” David chuckled. “I actually respect that you came to me instead of caving to her threats. That shows real character. I’ll have a serious talk with Meredith about her behavior, and I’ll make sure my wife understands the situation too.”

He stood up and walked me to the door. “Delete that recording, Anthony. This stays between us.”

I nodded and pulled out my phone, deleting the audio file right there in front of him.

Of course, I didn’t mention the backup copy I’d already saved to my laptop. Just in case.

A week later, I got promoted to marketing manager. A month after that, I was leading my own team.

And Meredith? She never called me again.

I heard through office gossip that her parents had finally had “the talk” with her, and she’d stopped the fake boyfriend routine altogether.

Sometimes I still think about that crazy month and shake my head. Five hundred dollars almost cost me everything I’d worked for. But in the end, being honest and standing up for myself turned out to be the best career move I ever made.

And Mom? She’s doing great, thanks to that promotion and the raise that came with it.
