Custard Pie holds a special place in the world of traditional, comfort desserts — its simplicity and richness allowing it to be loved by many.

With its roots deeply planted in European cuisine, particularly in British culinary history, this dish has traversed the ocean and found a warm welcome in American kitchens, often gracing dinner tables during holidays and family gatherings.

Its velvety texture and sweet, mild flavor provide a canvas that celebrates the pure essence of dairy and eggs, making it a timeless classic.

When it comes to serving Custard Pie, less is often more to let its delicate flavors shine.

A light dusting of nutmeg or cinnamon can add a waft of spice, and a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream complements its creamy profile.

For a more contrasting accompaniment, fresh berries or a tangy fruit sauce can balance the sweetness with a touch of acidity.

Whether enjoyed as an after-dinner treat or a savory snack, Custard Pie is versatile and best served chilled or at room temperature.

Custard Pie

Ingredients:

– 1 frozen unbaked pie crust
– 4 large eggs
– 3/4 cup granulated sugar
– 1/4 teaspoon salt
– 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
– 2 cups milk, heated until warm
– Freshly grated nutmeg (optional, for garnish)
– Whipped cream or fresh berries (optional, for serving)

Instructions:

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Take your frozen unbaked pie crust and place it on a baking sheet to catch any spills during the baking process.

2. In a large mixing bowl, beat the eggs gently with a whisk until they are well combined but not frothy.

3. Add the granulated sugar, salt, and vanilla extract to the eggs, and whisk until the ingredients are fully incorporated.

4. Gradually stir in the warm milk until the mixture is smooth and well blended. Be careful to not overmix, as this can create air bubbles that will affect the texture of the custard.

5. Pour the custard mixture into the pie crust. If you’re using nutmeg, lightly grate it over the top of the custard for added flavor.

6. Carefully place the baking sheet with the pie into the preheated oven. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, or until the custard is set and slightly jiggly in the middle. A knife inserted near the center should come out clean.

7. Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool on a wire rack to room temperature. After it has cooled, you can refrigerate the pie to chill it further.

8. Serve your Custard Pie with a choice of whipped cream or fresh berries on the side. Enjoy this creamy delight with friends and family.
