Shortly after the divorce was finalized, his mom introduced him to her new boyfriend, Chris. Chris was a former inmate imprisoned for driving under the influence, and the man’s mother worked as a correctional officer at their local county jail. This should have been the first red flag, but seeing that Chris made his mother happy, he didn’t push the subject and supported their relationship.
The man and his two siblings got along well with their mom’s boyfriend. Everything was going well for the family, and they’d been accustomed to calling the man their stepfather. In 2017, during one of his routine probationary checks at the courthouse, the FBI caught up with Chris.
It turned out that his family in Texas was implicated in several crimes, and due to him being in a vehicle while one of the crimes was ongoing, he needed to be arrested. He subsequently agreed to testify against his family in exchange for a reduced sentence. Throughout Chris’s time in Texas, the man’s mom was devastated.

When he returned, things didn’t turn out as expected. While he was allowed to go back to his job at a local franchise, he started to drink heavily.
Chris was no stranger to drinking, given his previous DUI charge, but he drank about 12 beers a day. Whenever he was drunk, his mouth was incredibly foul. While he never got physical with the man’s mother, his words were as sharp as a knife.
The man’s mom tried to understand Chris’s situation and tolerated the drinking for a couple of years because it was likely due to stress. However, one night, the woman was tired of her boyfriend’s behavior. When Chris came home drunk one night, she kicked him out, and he ended up living with a friend.
The following morning, they packed his essentials so he didn’t need to enter the house again. It was after then that the family received a knock on the door. It was Chris’s co-worker, Betty.
