“I inquired, ‘Who are you?’ to the unfamiliar man beside me in bed, and he replied, ‘I’m your husband’ — A Tale of the Day.”

One night, I returned home and settled next to my husband in bed.

However, when he awoke, I was confronted by the unfamiliar face of a stranger who shared a life-altering secret that I could scarcely accept.

“Are you really my grandfather?” I queried into the phone after receiving a puzzling call one day.

I had no remaining family; my mother had succumbed to cancer years earlier, and my maternal grandparents had passed when she was very young.

I had no knowledge of my father either.

My mother had told me he vanished after learning of her pregnancy with me.

As a result, I had never fostered meaningful relationships with men.

Now, however, a stranger claimed to be my grandfather and wanted to meet with me.

He had tracked me down thanks to one of those DNA test kits, which I had ordered only to uncover my medical background. Suddenly, I appeared to have family.

He lived in a different town and even purchased my plane ticket to come see him. “Hi, Lucy. I’m Zachary Gaines. It’s a pleasure to meet you,” he greeted me.

“It’s nice to meet you too. I’m not the best at small talk, so can I ask why my father left my mother when she was pregnant?” I inquired right away.

Zachary took a deep breath and began his tale. “My son, Peter, didn’t abandon you. One day, he left for a business trip that extended for several months. He returned, announcing he had fallen in love and was getting married,” he recounted.

“We were so happy he was finally settling down. But the very next day, he was involved in a severe car crash and died. He hadn’t mentioned anything about your mother, and his phone was destroyed in the accident, so we had no way to reach you,” he concluded, a tear rolling down his cheek.

Zachary shared more stories about my father and suggested I move to his town. He owned a publishing business and wanted me to work with him. Eager for family after many solitary years, I agreed.

Eventually, Zachary’s health necessitated his retirement, and we hired Mary as his live-in caregiver. She introduced me to her friend Alex, and we instantly connected.

Our romance was intense. Although I wasn’t savvy about men, he was stunning and adored me. We married just a month after our first meeting, with my grandfather giving me away at the wedding.

While I worried about Zachary’s declining health, Alex was incredibly supportive.

I believed my life was perfect.

Alex came from a wealthy background, and we had a beautiful home.

He enjoyed spending time helping out at my grandfather’s house, even with Mary there. We all formed a close bond during that time.

One day, I received a call from Alex while I was driving home. “Honey, I’m at your granddad’s house. Where are you?” he asked.

“Hi. I’m just finishing up work, but I want to go home and get some rest in our bed,” I replied.

“I might stay here a while longer. Don’t wait up for me,” Alex said. I thought nothing of it and continued on my journey. Unfortunately, traffic was heavy, and it took me an hour to get home.

I felt exhausted yet alert enough to notice a strange pair of sneakers by the door—something Alex would never wear. I shrugged it off and went inside, where I found him asleep on our bed and climbed in next to him.

“Hey, love. You got back earlier than I expected,” I said, snuggling up to him. He stirred, turned to face me, and it wasn’t him at all.

“Hello,” the stranger greeted. I leapt out of bed, my heart racing.

“Who are you?!” I shouted, fear washing over me.

“Your husband… technically,” he replied.

“No way! I’m calling the police!” I threatened.

“You can try, but you’ll end up in jail for trespassing in my home,” he said calmly.

“What?!” I was taken aback. The stranger revealed information I could hardly digest.

“I’m Alex Cherry, and you’re technically married to me because my brother Todd has been impersonating me for months. I went on a business trip to Africa and only learned the truth after hiring a private investigator to find my brother,” he explained.

“How can I trust you over my husband?” I asked, bewildered.

“I’ll show you. Todd and I come from a privileged background, but he often got into trouble, leading my parents to disown him. He was involved in multiple crimes over time, but I never imagined he would stoop to this,” Alex began.

He showcased photos of them as children on his laptop, along with Todd’s mug shot and evidence of his wrongdoings. “He’s currently involved with a woman named Mary, and they’re planning to swindle an elderly man out of his company,” Alex concluded.

“My grandfather’s company! That’s why he rushed me into marrying him!” I exclaimed.

“Zachary Gaines is your grandfather?” Alex confirmed.

“Yes! But I mean, Todd is there with Mary right now!” I exclaimed. “Can we call the authorities?”

“They should already be en route. I contacted them the moment I got to town, but I guess I became exhausted and dozed off,” Alex explained. “Let’s head over.”

True to his word, Todd and Mary were arrested right on my grandfather’s lawn for multiple charges, including identity theft. Fortunately, Zachary recovered, and the courts annulled my sham marriage.

In time, I grew closer to the genuine Alex. After I overcame the shock of his brother’s deceit, we began dating and eventually made our way to the altar.

So, what lessons can we take from this story?
